2013 Andreas

THE STORY:

There are times when less is more; in this case, more is less. This Andreas is so opulent, there is little to say. Same 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, same block 19, same new Vicard French Oak with 30 months barrel aging attention to details yet i believe this is one of the best ever.

A classic growing season on the warm side that fully matured the phenols yet with cool nights which helped retain a bunch of vibrant character; As a result, It was born a dark multi-layered wine with an awesome backbone and such a liveliness it does fit right-on in the Den Hoed family traits!

This is the type of wine that makes a winemaker proud. The type of wine that reminds me that the experience and the winemaking techniques are everything in making a world-class wine but that the end result will only be as good as what the fruit was grown to deliver. Congratulations to the den Hoed team for growing top notch grapes and to me for not screwing it up this time. Cheers!

95+ POINTS - Wine Advocate

"Made by winemaker Gilles Nicault, the 2013 Andreas from Den Hoed checks in as 100% Cabernet Sauvignon that's from the Wallula Vineyard in the Horse Heaven Hills. Its deep ruby/purple color is followed by sensational notes of black currants, graphite, asphalt and licorice. Gorgeously pure, ripe, layered and silky on the palate, this is easily the finest wine I've tasted from this estate. The tannin is present yet polished and ripe. Count me impressed."

100% Wallula Vineyard

Considered by some to be the best vineyard site in Washington state, Wallula Vineyard is a picturesque growing location nestled high above the mighty Columbia River south of Kennewick. The vineyard is planted on south-facing slopes which vary from 2% up to 30% grade and its perimeter totals 9 miles of varied terrain.  Of this perimeter, the shore of the Columbia River provides nearly 3.5 miles of waterfront. From the river's edge at 320 feet above sea level, the property climbs a distance of nearly 3.5 miles to its peak elevation of 1367 feet. The lower elevations of the property provide ideal growing conditions for ultra-premium reds while conditions at the upper elevations allow for high quality whites to be grown. The river is of utmost importance as the water acts as a massive insulator where during the day heat accumulates quickly and at night it provides a cooling effect once the sun goes down.

Wallula's beauty as well as its suitability to winegrapes is due in part to the huge Missoula floods that raced down the Columbia River during the last ice age. The surging waters deposited Shano silt loam soils on the site, and carved the steep, basalt-rimmed canyon walls atop which the vineyards are planted.
